\"The North Block of St. Joseph\u2019s College was built in 1920, with construction of the West Block following in 1925. They are the only pre-war constructions within the school premises.

In 1875, six La Salle Brothers took over St. Saviour\u2019s College (founded in 1864) and renamed it St. Joseph\u2019s College. The College became a grant-in-aid school in 1880. Due to the increase in students, the College moved to Caine Road in 1876 and then to Glenealy below Robinson Road in 1881. The 1918 earthquake caused severe damage to the school premises, and the College moved to its present site at 7 Kennedy Road, which had previously been home to the German Club (the Club Germania). The North Block was opened in 1920 to house classrooms. Comprising a chapel, a hall and laboratories, the West Block was opened in 1925. During the Japanese Occupation (1941-1945), the College was used by the Japanese as a hospital store.

The North Block is a four-storey building flanked by two towers at both ends and has verandahs on one side. The exterior facade facing Cotton Tree Drive is decorated with two-storey giant Ionic order columns. The elevation facing the internal open space of a multi-purpose ball court is surrounded by an open corridor comprising nine arched bays with a Serliana-styled pediment in the centre. The West Block is also a four-storey structure enclosed by solid walls and punched windows and surmounted by a turret.\"

\"The Man Mo Temple Compound on Hollywood Road in Sheung Wan comprising three blocks \u2013 Man Mo Temple, Lit Shing Kung and Kung Sor \u2013 was built between 1847 and 1862 by wealthy Chinese merchants, primarily for the worship of Man Cheong (God of Literature) and Mo Tai (God of Martial Arts). Lit Shing Kung was built for the worship of all the Chinese gods, while Kung Sor served as a meeting place and a venue for dealing with matters related to the Chinese community in the neighbourhood. The three blocks are separated by two alleys.

Man Mo Temple was officially entrusted to Tung Wah Hospital with the enactment of the Man Mo Temple Ordinance in 1908. Even today, the Board of Directors of the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals and community celebrities still congregate at the temple every year for the Autumn Sacrificial Rites to pay homage to Man Cheong and Mo Tai and to pray for prosperity for Hong Kong. The temple is of paramount historical and social value to the territory, as it represents the traditional social organisation and religious practices of the Chinese community in old Hong Kong.

Man Mo Temple is a two-hall-three-bay structure fronted by two granite drum platforms. A pair of screen doors is placed in the front hall. In accordance with the traditional Chinese architectural layout, the rear hall housing the altars of the deities is a few steps higher than the front hall. The two halls are separated by a courtyard covered by a double-eaved hip-and-gable roof supported by four granite columns at the corner of the courtyard and flanked by two side chambers with humpbacked roofs. Lit Shing Kung, attached to Man Mo Temple on the left, originally comprised three halls and two courtyards, which were later covered by steel roofs. Kung Sor is now a simple one-hall structure; the historical granite doorframe on which the year of construction can be found is still well preserved .

The magnificent Man Mo Temple Compound is a fine example of traditional Chinese vernacular architecture and is exquisitely decorated with ceramic figurines, granite and wood carvings, plaster mouldings and murals, all of which exhibit superb traditional craftsmanship.\"

\"The Green Island lighthouse compound comprises an old lighthouse built in 1875, a new lighthouse built in 1904, former European quarters and a former keeper\u2019s house. Both the old and the new lighthouses have illuminated the course for thousands of vessels entering Hong Kong waters from the western approach for over a century and have played an important role in Hong Kong\u2019s maritime history.


The Green Island lighthouse started operation on 1 July 1875, about three months after Hong Kong\u2019s first lighthouse was erected at Cape D\u2019Aguilar. A plan to move the lantern of the Cape D\u2019Aguilar lighthouse to Green Island was proposed in 1901, and this required the construction of a taller and larger tower to accommodate it.


The construction of a new lighthouse adjacent to the old one on Green Island commenced in 1904 and was completed in 1905, and the old lighthouse then lost its original function. The new lighthouse was fully automated in the 1970s and is still in use today.


The old lighthouse is a 12-metre tall small circular tower constructed of granite with a doorway that features projected rock-faced quoins. On the walls are two cross-shaped openings resembling the arrow slits found in mediaeval European castles that are designed to admit air and light.


The new lighthouse is also a circular tower. Constructed of granite and concrete, it is about 17.5 metres tall with a steel lantern on top. The whole structure is painted white to ensure its high visibility for seafarers as well as to provide thermal insulation and protection for the structure itself. The spiral staircase is of fine masonry with beautiful railings, while the entrance and window are in the form of segmental arches with ornamental plaster mouldings.


Probably built in the late 19th century, the former European staff quarters forms an integral part of the lighthouse compound. The building is adorned with Classical features, such as the front porch supported by columns with modified capitals. The quarters was originally a single-storey building, but an upper floor was added in 1923. 


The former keeper\u2019s house is a one-storey flat-roofed block in a simple L-shape; it features segmental arched windows and overhanging eaves.

The 1950s saw the duties of lighthouse keeper previously fulfilled by Europeans gradually taken over by local staff, but they also became redundant when automatic equipment was introduced in the 1970s. The two buildings serving as quarters for the lighthouse staff were then converted and used as the Police Recreation Centre for a time. Today, the former quarters, the former keeper\u2019s house and the surrounding area (except for the two lighthouses) are leased to the Wu Oi Christian Centre as a youth drug treatment and rehabilitation centre.\"

\"King Yin Lei is a rare surviving example of the Chinese Renaissance style that reflects the excellence of design and construction in both Chinese and Western architecture in Hong Kong. The \u2018East meets West\u2019 methods used in its construction make the building a rarity in Hong Kong as well as an outstanding work of art.

Originally named \u2018Hei Lo\u2019, the building was designed by the architectural office of A.R.F. Raven and built in around 1937 for Mrs Shum Li Po-lun, the first owner, whose husband, Shum Yat-chor, was a notable merchant and philanthropist in Xinhui in Guangdong. The residence was sold in 1978 to Yeo (Yow) Chei-man and his son Yow Mok-shing, who renamed it \u2018King Yin Lei\u2019.

The building is an important landmark in the historical development of Hong Kong. As one of the luxury historic houses located on the hillside of Hong Kong Island, the building not only bears witness to the growing wealth and rising status of the Chinese community before the Second World War, but also represents an earlier phase of Hong Kong history in which a Chinese upper-class residential area took shape in Mid-Levels.

The fa\u00e7ade of the building is a popular spot for visitors to take photographs in front of, while its social value also lies in the role it has played in Hong Kong\u2019s entertainment industry and film heritage: the mansion has featured in several internationally renowned productions, including Soldier of Fortune(1955), and the local television series Delightful Dream of the Capital (1980). All of this reflects the beautifully scenic character of the site.

The building was sold to a new owner in August 2007, and work to remove the roof tiles, stone features and window frames was noticed on the site in early September 2007. Full restoration of Kin Yin Lei commenced in September 2008 and was completed in December 2010.\"

\"Water supply in Hong Kong before the 1860s mainly relied on basic sources such as wells and streams. The continual increase in the population and the accompanying expansion of the city from the middle of the 19th century onwards made the permanent provision of fresh water resources a matter of great urgency and accelerated the construction of reservoirs. The first water supply scheme was mooted during the governorship of Sir Hercules Robinson from 1859 to 1865. Completed in 1863, Pok Fu Lam Reservoir was the first reservoir ever built in Hong Kong; a series of extensions was undertaken between 1866 and 1871.\"

This bay has historical importance for its waterfall, which provided fresh water to the British and European sailors who would refill their supply on way to other Asian trade ports.  The notion of Hong Kong island having an abundance of flowing fresh water not only made this island valuable, but also caused inhabitants to name the area \"Fragrant Harbour\" (which originally referred to Aberdeen Harbour nearby this bay).  \"Fragrant Harbour\", which in translation became \"Hong Kong\", ultimately referred to the whole of the territory.

Notes:  One of the current uses of the bay is the ritual of \u9f8d\u6b78\u5009\u6d77 which means \"the dragon returning to the sea\".  It is part of the Fire Dragon Dance of Pokfulam Village, and features the crafted dragon entering Waterfall Bay and \"swimming\" out into the sea.

Post WWII Condition of HKU Main Building: (Source: HKU archives)

  1. There was a memorandum of Reconstitution of University (dated December 8th, 1945) prepared by Lt. Col. Gordon King (former dean of School of Medicine), which provided a brief assessment from preliminary inspection of HKU buildings done by L. W. Amps Lt. Col., from C. A. Works and Lt. Col. Gordon King himself on November 26th, 1945.
  2. Most of the damages were from looting (woods for fuel, lead piping, coppers and brass fitting)
  3. Assessment of Great Hall:
    1. timber beams and wood floor were removed
    2. steel roof was still intact
    3. plaster was still in good condition

    4. The initial repair suggestion was to add temporary galvanized iron sheet for the roof to protect the plaster.

  4. Library remained untouched, due to the efforts of Mr. Chan Kwan Po
  5. Art lecture rooms were structurally sound, the roof was intact, and the plaster was in a good condition, timber floor and some joinery were removed.
  6. Engineering drawing office and registrar office in annex were demolished and it was later found that the bricks of this building were used elsewhere.
  7. Report of a Committee on the Development of the University (dated March 1939) mentioned the possibility of relocating the university to a larger site outside the town.
  8. October 1st, 1946 was set as the date of the re-opening of the university, with 1st year classes in Arts, Science, Medicine, and possibly Engineering.

\"The Main Building of The University of Hong Kong is the oldest structure on the campus, which was donated to the university by Sir Hormusjee Nawrojee Mody, a well-known Parsi businessman and philanthropist. Construction of the building started in 1910 and was completed in 1912. Following the outbreak of the Pacific War in December 1941, the Main Building was used as a temporary hospital. It was seriously damaged during the final stages of the Japanese Occupation (1941-1945), and university classes did not resume there until October 1946.

Classical in style, this well-proportioned, three-storey red-brick building supported by granite columns of the Ionic order is designed symmetrically around the central axis of the clock tower and features pairs of turrets at both ends of the principal facade. Pediments surmount the entrance portico and the elevations of the east and west wings.\"

This L-shaped building situated at the junction of Wan Chai Gap Road and Queen's Road East, was erected between 1912 and 1913, and opened on 1 March 1915 as the Wan Chai Post Office. \"Built with financial assistance from Sir Paul Chater and Professor G. P. Jordan among others, this building was originally designed to house the student union and was officially opened by the then Governor, Sir Reginald Stubbs, in February 1919. It was temporarily used by the Registry after the Second World War, was later converted into the Senior Common Room in 1974 and housed the Department of Music from 1989 to 2012. The building was named in honour of Mr Hung Hing-ying in 1986 in recognition of his family\u2019s donations to the university.

The two-storey Classic Revival red-brick building has an impressive rotunda at the centre and two rectangular blocks projecting on each side as wings, each of which has a tall chimney stack on the south elevation and colonnaded verandahs on the north elevation.\"

This pretty building was originally designed to house the University Union and until 1946 was known as the Union Building and was the first home to the Student Union of University of Hong Kong. It was opened in 1919, having been constructed with the support of Professor C. A. Middleton Smith, Sir Catchick Paul Chater and Professor G. P. Jordan, the Acting Vice-Chancellor of the University at the time.

After World War II, the Building was adapted for administrative purposes. In 1974 it was converted for use as a Senior Common Room for the University's academic and senior administrative staff.

In 1986 the Building was renamed in honour of Mr Hung Hing Ying, in recognition of his support of the University, and for many years housed the Department of Music. In 1995 the Hung Hing Ying Building was declared a monument by the Hong Kong Government.

The building was the home of the Department of Music from November 1996 to January 2013, when the Department moved to the Run Run Shaw Tower of the Centennial Campus. Performances were occasionally held in the rotunda area under the magnificent central dome.

The two-storey Hung Hing Ying Building sits squarely in front of the Main Building. The central dome, entrance portico and balanced architectural proportions are strongly neoclassical, while its red brick walls complement the Edwardian Baroque aesthetics of the earlier Main Building. The Hung Hing Ying Building is the only building in the University campus with a dome-shaped structure, and the dome share the same axis of the Main Building's clock tower.

The most noticeable changes to the building was an east wing was added in 1962.
